Michelle - the new landlady of the Rovers Return?

Could Michelle Connor be the next Coronation Street character to have her name over the door at the Rovers Return?

Corrie producer Kate Oates has already revealed that there will be a new name above the door of the nation's favourite pub.  You can read that here along with more summer spoilers from Kate Oates.

The reason I'm wondering if it could be Michelle taking over the backstreet boozer is after her powerful performance last night on the show.  She gave Steve hell when she stormed in with lap-dog Robert in tow.  He's as boring and dull as they come, but he knows Michelle's fiery and feisty and he seems to like his ladies that way.  I think Robert will hang on to Michelle's tailcoat as she navigates her way through her divorce from Steve, taking what he can.

I'd like to see Michelle take over the Rovers, what do you think?  But whoever takes it over, what then will become of Steve and mum Liz?

I definitely wouldn't want Michelle to become landlady. She's never even seemed friendly or calm enough to be there as the landlord's wife. Her recent behavior towards a staff member and throwing around glasses and bottles shows she definitely belongs on the customer side of a bar.
I'd rather see just about anyone else or any combination of Corrie residents buy the pub. Why not have Liz keep her half and Steve sell his to Leanne and Eva?

I really don't want Steve and Liz to leave the Rovers, but awful Michelle taking over would really be salt in the wound.

No thank you. I'm fed up with the producers trying to convince viewers that Michelle is wonderful and lovable. She isn't. She can't even plan a successful wedding, let alone pull her weight behind the bar, so how could she succeed as a landlady? This would be a massive turn-off for viewers.

I don't think she has any right to half of Steve's money. They were only married for two years and have no dependants. He had a one night stand when she had walked out on him. Michelle had an unconsummated romance whilst he was suffering depression in Spain. Why should she be entitled to half of everything he has worked for? Why can't she disappear off to a cruise ship ASAP?

Anyone but her! (okay, excepting Phelan.) I breathe a sigh of relief whenever she goes back to Ireland. I do want to stress though that I'm not a long-term Michelle-hater. I know there are many who've loathed her for years, whereas my dislike is comparatively recent. In fairness to Kim Marsh, it's largely down to incredible unevenness in the writing for the character.(The same problem Sean has often suffered from.) I feel her reaction to Steve's fling was way over the top, squandering any sympathy she had rightly won for her trauma in losing her own baby. I just don't think she's enough of a people person to be landlady.

I agree anyone but her. My least favourite person on the street. Maybe Norris should move over to the Rovers or Dev should buy it for Erica and she could employ Liz.

She isn't entitled to half precisely for the reasons you brought up. This is just him being the same doormat towards her that he's always been. Which of his other exes has Steve been this generous with?

Rebecca said...

No. No. NO!!! She's not entitled to half of his assets, plus Liz and Steve are just meant to be there. I've never been a fan. Maybe she'd been more suited to the Street battle ax, but not the landlady.

I agree with all the above comments, I really wouldn't want to see Michelle as landlady. Kym Marsh herself seems to think Michelle is too good for Steve, when in fact she doesn't deserve him. I hope and pray she gets written out sooner rather than later and she can take wooden Robert with her.

Although I do not like Michelle and would hate her as landlady....I have to say...
People are forgetting....she took on all responsibility while Steve went to 'get well' in Spain. He was enjoying himself at the end and refused to come home leaving her on her own. She felt abandoned and almost...almost had an affair with her exboyfriend.
Steve could not bear the thought of her 'kissing' another man and kicked her out. Technically she may have walked out to call his bluff....but in the end he made her feel there was nothing to stay for and she left.
Considering that she got over his affair with Becky years before I think a kiss is not a big deal. He had no consideration for her at all.
So while I do not want her Cleopatra eyes and folded arms behind the bar....she is entitled to something!

No,she's far too much of a marmite character to be in that central role. No matter how hard the producers try,many- if not most- viewers just can't warm to her as a character or she and Steve as a couple. I wish she and the charisma free Robert would leave the Street to start a new live together,as far away as possible.

She's entitled to something, after all they were married and she mostly worked in the pub for the past few years, but half the proceeds from the sale of a pub is a bit much. Those two just bring out the worst in each other.

Yes, Steve went on holiday to get well. Depression is a real illness and his was officially diagnosed. If he needed a change of scenery to get over an accident or physical injury I doubt anyone would think it was a sacrifice that his wife stayed behind with Liz and other staff to watch a small pub for a few months. Besides, that's where she would have been working even if she was a stranger to him, Michelle's wedding planning business is part time at best.

Liz actually managed the pub while Steve was in Spain and when he and Michelle went on holiday to recover from the loss of Ruari but I don't see her demanding Steve's half of the pub for that. Too bad she hasn't because she'd deserve to have the pub on her own after putting up with their drama all this time.

Good point Maricha.....she did ignore Liz's contribution and moaned and groaned a lot. And half of the pub is Liz's so technically that would entitle Michelle to only 25% of the pub. And he only owns half of Streetcars and she has never worked there.
I really did not like...and I am surprised no one has mentioned this....I did not like that she shut Liz out when they lost the baby.
Liz was the only close family member there.....and she was hurting too. There was no reason that Michelle should have been so clod towards her.
Again, I am not a Michelle fan....and to be honest when I saw her sleep with Robert to massage her own ego....I did not feel sorry for him....I thought poor Tracy. lol Because of all the people for Robert to end up with, I think it will hurt her most that it is one of the entitled Connors.

I have to say that Kym Marsh's acting skills have definitely improved, probably because the directors and writers have given her character more attention. They haven't made the character particularly sympathetic, although KM's Twitter followers may say otherwise. Naturally, the couple should employ good solicitors but they won't as professional help would be far too mundane for Corrie.

Michelle isn't just losing her livelihood, she's also losing her home. Does Steve still own a share in Streetcars and is Michelle going to ask for some part of that? I don't think she should actually retain a day-to-day share of the pub as it would be unworkable with her renting a flat somewhere else and working alongside her ex-mother-in-law. Steve should sell an agreed share of the pub and give the proceeds to Michelle to set up her own home and maybe buy into the Bistro.

A new joint-licensee would bring some energy to the Rovers set-up which is getting staid. As someone said in another post, maybe Erica could inherit some money, or a new character on the Street could buy in. Naturally, this character would be male and become a possible love interest for Liz.

I don't judge Michelle harshly for shutting out Liz because she did that to everyone. That's how she is and grief only amplified it. I think she did come to see Liz was grieving too. Michelle only opened up a bit more to Robert because he was always underfoot, not because she really wanted to.

Lol. I hope this teaches Tracy a valuable lesson: if you're going to resort to blackmail, do it only for your benefit. If she had gotten Carla's money for herself rather than to give to Robert, she could probably afford to buy the Flower Shop instead of begging Ken for help and Robert would have left ages ago with nothing unless he stayed with her. For a bad girl, she's doing it all wrong ;-)

I agree - totally . There isn't much to warm to about Michelle except the loss of her baby . She's now gone back to being a nasty piece of work . I've never understood why the writers and producers think more of her than the Corrie fans do . Liz and Steve must stay in the Rovers and wave Michelle and Robert off as they go away for a 'fresh start'

Newfy Pearl said...

OMG Maricha you are so right! Poor Tracy....she could have kept that money instead of supporting Robert's dream! But as tough as Tracy is she too has a soft spot....
Humpty: I agree the only place for Michelle is the Bistro..but as for her buying in, Nick was not happy about having Robert for a partner I don't see Michelle making it a trio.
As for Nick...hmmmm...he is leaving. If they kill him off then Leane will be well off financially. I would like to see that for a change.
Thanks again to the runners of this blog and all those who contribute in comments. I love chatting about Corrie. :-)

In the real world, which Corrie isn't, I think she'd be entitled to half of the marital estate, i.e., what they accumulated while they were married. I don't believe she had any other financial investment in the Rovers, so the only reason Steve would have to sell his share would be if they didn't have the cash because he spent it on himself (grossly under exaggerated). Not half of what he owns, half of what they built up while they were married. Yes he was wrong sleeping with Leanne while they were apart but she has now slept with Robert while they're still married. Neither one of them has been an open book and there was good reason to conceal Oliver's parentage; families do.

That said, I really dislike Michelle. Last night she surpassed Anna on the harridan scale, and as a customer, I'd hate going to a pub where the smiles are pasted on at best. She has done nothing to build up the Rovers, she's basically the senior employee, and has a personality that will curdle milk. If it can't be Liz, maybe Erica. Or Tim. Oh heck, you could even bring back Stella. Anyone but Michelle.

Newfy Pearl said...

I love it abbyk - bring back Stella....lol
I love Liz behind the bar, and I hate to think the McDonalds will no longer own it.
But I hear that Mick Carter is leaving the Queen Vic on Eastenders....maybe he can come in to shake things up. lol About time we have legitimate eye candy for the ladies behind the bar. ;-)

Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) is not eye candy!!!!

Hmm,I wonder if the reason Michelle encourages Johnny who may have second thoughts about marrying Jenny to cancel the wedding is not so much out of concern for her cousin but perhaps hoping he'll buy the Rovers for her?
That being said Michelle would not be a good landlady as she would be domineering and as we've seen with Eva abusive.
I think she would have a staff of one,Sarah and her only customers would be her cousins.

JUST NO! (Sorry for shouting). Abbyk is right - Michelle does have a personality that would curdle milk.

If Steve & Liz sell the pub, at least Steve would still have Streetcars.

NO way does Michelle deserve to have her name above the Rovers! If Steve and Liz must sell than I'd like to see Rosie and Sophie give it a whirl as a comedy addition to the street. Or have Claire Peacock return to the street with her boys, now that'd shake things up. But on a serious note I'd like Eva and Leanne to own it. Michelle is too nasty and I'm not best pleased with how the writers have been twisting her character.
Anyone but the Connors and certainly not Michelle.

Tvor said...

It wouldn't be a new name over the door. Michelle's is already over the door.

Newfy Pearl said...

Good point Tvor. I forgot that they mentioned that in a recent episode. I always thought it was still in Liz's name.

I think Michelle will be the new landlady of the Rovers Return, and not to be Steve's ex-wife, and not to be Robert's newest girlfriend & newest female lover, and not let Steve to have Leanne as his newest girlfriend. Steve wants Michelle to stay as his wife, while he and his mother, Liz, not to leave the Rovers Return forever.

I think since Mary family is moving to the street , Jude should buy in to the Rovers. Then Mary could work there as well.
