Julie Hesmondhalgh on her new theatre role

Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, is currently on a break from Corrie to star in a play based on the murder of Sophie Lancaster.

Julie was interviewed on BBC Breakfast today talking about her role in the play called Black Roses.

She says she is very grateful indeed to ITV for allowing her time off to do the play. As for Hayley's absence from Roy's life and the cobbles while Julie is acting on stage, Julie didn't explain what was going to happen and said she didn't know what was on the cards for the Croppers. Let's just hope Hayley's absence doesn't give Mary ideas to set her cap at Roy again. Oi! Mary! No!

She talks about playing Hayley in Corrie for 15 years - although Hayley was originally pencilled in for just a few weeks, says Julie.

You can watch Julie's interview on the BBC website here.

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster is on at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester from the 19th to 29th September.  Full details are here.

What a great interview. Julie is really a wonderful "story teller", and has such warmth and grace. I really hope to see the play, and look forward to her character's return in Corrie.
