Coronation Street fan of the week - Elizabeth in Florida

It's Wednesday and time to meet another Corrie fan of the week.

Would you like to be our Coronation Street fan of the week?
Click here to find out more.

Who are you and where are you from?
I'm Elizabeth Candy, originally from Manchester but migrated to Canada and retired to Florida, USA.

How long have you been watching Corrie?
I have been watching Coronation Street since the first episode. When I moved to Canada I was able to continue watching but it is not broadcast in the US so I had a friend tape the omnibus edition each week. Once a month I received the video and got to have a Coronation Street fest. Now I am able to watch online and am in sync with the UK episodes. It is a great thrill to hear local towns, stores, football teams etc mentioned.

Who are your favourite female and male characters - and the reasons why?
My favorite current characters are Hayley and Roy and Anna and in the beginning it it was the characters of Annie, Elsie, Dennis and the triumvirate in the snug Ena, Minnie and Martha that drew me to the Street.

What's been some of your favourite Corrie storylines over the years?
Some of my favouite stories - there are so many. But I loved the Vera and Jack plot lines over the years and in particular how their passing was handled. I loved Hilda and Stan and the muriels and more recently I really enjoyed Ken's affair with Martha -  beautifully acted by Stephanie Beacham. I thought that finally Ken had found his soul mate and I was really disappointed when he let her go. But then that's Ken ... and soapland !!!!  I'm not too keen on the sensational storylines that the current producer has introduced. Let's get back to basics.

And what would your fantasy Corrie storyline be?
My fantasy story line involves the return of Becky who I feel was a real multi-layered character excellently portrayed by Katherine Kelly and one of my favourites. She and her boyfriend will have married on a beach in the Caribbean, she will have adopted the little boy and they move back to Weatherfield to open a hotel and live happily ever after. In addition my other fantasy is that Dennis and Rita live happily and trauma free as man and wife... a great nod to the past.

Have you any snippets or news about meeting any of the Corrie cast, or trips to the set, etc., that you'd like to share?
I have three snippets.
In 1962 I invited Adele Rose one of the original Corrie Street writers to speak at my University drama club. She accepted but I was embarrassed by the very small turnout.  I offered to drive her home afterwards and was so flustered I forgot to turn on  the headlights on my car. We were stopped by the police. When I explained who was in the car he let me off with a warning.
My husband and I were lucky enough to visit the set when it was open to the public. I wanted to videotape the whole experience but had forgotten to recharge my battery which died after 30 seconds. So my husband warmed the battery under his arm and that gave me another 30 seconds of filming. He repeated this a couple more times until the battery finally gave up the ghost.
I was back home on a visit when I saw Curly Watts head in to a local bank. I was dying to follow him in and strike up a conversation but decided to respect his privacy and so missed an opportunity to meet him.
