Remembering Coronation Street's Phyllis Pearce

One of the many great things about watching Coronation Street for years, decades even, is the affection you develop for some of the characters. A few can walk off the cobbles and be instantly forgotten, but others will stick in your mind as if you knew them personally.

One of my perennial favourites was Phyllis Pearce, played by Jill Summers.  Phyllis was given a mention just recently in Coronation Street in a bit of a 'blink and you'll miss it' moment. She was gravel-voiced and purple-haired and many fans became a dab-hand at doing their Phyllis impersonation of "Ooh! Percy!".

In this wonderful clip below, Phyllis tries to woo Percy (who steadfastly refused to be woo'd by ayone, and especially by Phyllis) into attending an art class with her.

"There'll be models," she tells him, to which he replies. "What do you think I am? A pervert?"

It's well worth a little look.

Coronation Street characters currently missing in action

With Coronation Street's current focus on the Who Pushed Ken? and Bethany's grooming storylines, a few of the regulars have been squeezed off screen for a while.

Let's take a look at those Corrie characters who are currently missing in action and try to find out where they are.
Eileen came back from her holiday after staying with her sister Julie. And then... she disappeared again. We know she's around somewhere, possibly out shopping for yet another leatherette handbag. Come on Eileen, show yourself!

Dev, Erica and the twins haven't been seen on screen for a while. Erica made a fleeting appearance with Kev Webster, prompting a blog post asking if there was a possible romance on the cards between the two of them. You can read more on that here.

If we can't have more Dev and the twins at the moment, then please, Corrie, don't deny us more Erica, she's great!
Yasmeen Nazir hasn't been seen for a while. Is she hiding out at the Community Centre? She hasn't even popped into Roy's Rolls for ages.  Where's she gone?

Cathy's nephew Alex hasn't been working in Roy's for some time.  The actor who plays him is appearing in a stage play next week - you can read more on that here - but do we know if he's returning?
And nosy Norris hasn't been on the lookout for gossip from behind the counter in the Kabin. Where's he gone, eh?

Much as I love a big story line, I do find I'm missing the subtlety of these regular character appearances.

Which THREE Corrie characters would you get rid of?

With Freddie's departure on Friday night last week from Coronation Street, I'm wondering which characters I'd actually like to see leave.  I'll miss Freddie and I liked him a lot, it's a real shame he's gone.

Instead of Freddie leaving, there are a few other characters I could do without and would like to see the back of.

Here's my current top three characters I'd like to chop right now from the cobbles. I say it's my 'current' choice because my top three constantly change.  And so, in no particular order, for today anyway, here they are:

Sean Tully

He's hardly in the show any way any more so who'd miss him? Eileen's got a house full, Billy's moved on to life with Todd and there's little chance that Marcus will come for him any day soon.  Apart from a raised eyebrow behind the bar a la Bet Lynch, Sean's not done much in months. I'd like to see him leave with a new love and an open return.

Rana Nazir

There are some characters that I try to warm to. I really try. Sadly, for this Corrie fan, Rana Nazir isn't one of those. She's got lovely hair, though.

Maria Connor

Speaking of lovely hair, the lovely Maria wasn't missed much in our house when she was locked up in the big house for a few months.  Her friendship with David might just redeem her, so watch this space.

Which three characters would you get rid of, right now, if you had to?
