Would Rita and Norris be good together after all?

We saw some lovely scenes last night involving heartbroken Rita and Norris as her good friend and ally. They reminded me of the "old Corrie" - we could all relate to what we were watching and I'm sure we all cared about poor Rita and were heartened to see Norris show his softer side once again.

This has led me to ponder whether perhaps Rita would have been better settling down with Norris rather than that rascal Dennis. Several people have commented that Rita and Dennis were never suited, never a good match on screen and that they couldn't see them as a "romantic" couple.

I don't necessarily think this was down to the age difference in the characters either. What started out as one old friend helping out another in a time of need quickly turned into a romance when in actual fact I don't think there had been any of that for Rita and Dennis in the past.

I'm not saying Rita needs a man, I'm just sad for her being on her own again. I know she said she'd had plenty of happiness in her life and that she had been loved but she has been left by all her partners one way or another. Len died on his way back from his fancy piece; Alan Bradley tried to kill her and was subsequently hit by That Tram; Ted died of a brain tumour not long into their marriage; it didn't work out with Alec Gilroy and Colin Grimshaw was a non-starter. Even Mavis left her in the end to run a B&B in Cartmel.

However Norris was right last night - Rita is strong, tough and resilient and this is great to see in an older woman on television.

I love Rita and Norris together, both when they bicker and when Norris shows how much he cares for her. In many ways he values and respects Rita more than Dennis ever did or probably could. I guess in many ways their on screen partnership has lasted longer than most Weatherfield marriages! Perhaps it's best that they never get together, not even in a platonic sense as Corrie can excel in that "what might have been" way. I just can't help wondering what might have happened if Rita had accepted that marriage proposal from Norris...

So what do you think of Rita and Norris? Did you enjoy the scenes last night? Do you think Norris would be better for Rita than Dennis ever could have been?

Really enjoyed last nights episodes, Norris is lovely at the moment. Together with Rita? I'm not sure, I like their friendship anything more might spoil it.
Silly Anna, what was she thinking! But now of course Phelan has a text message on his phone, 'need to see you' how damaging is that going to be!

No - please don't put them together.

No, Rita doesn't deserve him. She is plain nasty, it won't be long before she begins lording over him again and making snide remarks.

Their sweetness won't last. Rita will be back lording it over Norris and, instead of putting her in her place, he'll just mutter to himself. Enough of what happens to Rita, what about Norris? He could develop a friendship with Roy, be kinder to Mary, and a romance would be quite nice, too. There's no-one on the Street atm but maybe Emily has a friend?

I can't see Rita in a relationship with Norris, other than that of long-time co-workers.
I'm not sure what Rita is looking for in a relationship. A meaningful companionship with someone she can respect, which certainly wasn't the case with Dennis might top the list.
Rita helped old friend Dennis out, but she came to realize he wasn't worthy of her respect, no matter that he did try, and that I believe is why she began to feel she owned him or he owed her.
I would like also to see Norris be kinder to Mary, and to everyone really. At the moment I see him as a single soul, not ready to share himself, or anything, in a deeper, meaningful friendship.

I think it's nice to see a solid friendship on Coronation Street and don't think it should develop into anything more.

I agree with other posters who have raised the idea that Norris and Roy should develop a friendship. I would love to hear Roy's replies to Norris' snide remarks about others, it would really help to soften Norris' character. They have a mutual friend already in Mary, she could be the one to prod them into spending time together.

You have to be bonkers - within a matter of weeks Queen Rita would be treating Norris worse than she treated hapless Dennis, talking down to him, making jokes at his expense and openly sneering. She often bullies Norris already so in a relationship - absolutely no way hose. Rita loves lording it over everyone and the way she behaves in the Kabin like she still owns it. I really dont like what they have done to Rita's character one bit and that hair resembles a spaceship more each day, she wont be able to get in the door soon.

I'd prefer to see Norris and Rita remain and continue as solid friends, not as a couple. Graeme, you say Rita doesn't need a man but you're sad for her being on her own again. That's a bit conflicting; Rita has always had strong relationships with her friends, much stronger than with "a man" (as in lover/husband). I think the relationship between Rita and Norris would have been ruined had they married.

No they could never be together. I think Norris has always had a bit of a thing for her - he did propose to her in 2007 - but she doesn't return his feelings. Pretty realistic relationship actually.

no no no no no. Not. Absolutely no way. You want viewers out the door..put these two together. They are not meant to be together - it wouldn't be right.

Not in a million years. They are great as combative friends/colleagues, but that's it.

I agree with Frosty on this one!

I wasn't saying they should, just setting out the idea of what if... :)

I'm with Frosty on this one. They would be a disaster together and with both having nasty streaks it would be unbearable. -smelloid
